Story Starter - Have a go at writing the rest of the story

Toby poked his large, shaggy head out of his front door and sniffed. He loved the smell of the forest, especially first thing in the morning. He could almost taste the fresh, leafy goodness on his slobbering tongue as he dangled it out of his yawning mouth.

He could hear a rustling noise coming from nearby; one of the others was awake. You see, Toby wasn’t the only dog that lived in the forest…

Draw a picture of the perfect house for a dog to live in.

Think carefully about what it might have inside it. Label the picture to show off the amazing features you have included.

Research different types of dogs and what they look like.

Create a mini fact file about your favourite 5 breeds of dog.

Predict the type of dog you think Toby is and explain why

I think Toby is a Yorkshire Terrier because...

Use this website to help you look at the different dog breeds:

Persuasive writing

  • Imagine you want to get a pet dog like Toby. Write a list of the reasons for and against getting a dog.

  • Write a letter to your parent/carer trying to persuade them to let you have a dog
  • Create a leaflet about how to look after a pet dog (think back to when we wrote leaflets about how to care for a pet dragon - We had been reading 'How to Train Your Dragon')

If you don’t like dogs…

You can change these activities to include any animal you would like but remember your you need to try to persuade someone to let you have one in your letter (maybe avoid tigers and bears!)

  • Research different types of animals and create a fact file about them.

  •  If you learn some new vocabulary why don’t you start your own dictionary!

Carnivore   (noun) An animal that eats meat.

Find reading books that have a dog character in them.

Why don’t you email in the book titles you find and we can create a year group list. You might find a new book to read!

  2. Hairy Maclary by Lynley Dodd
  3. The Last Castaways by Harry Horse
